Sump: Dub Cote Cave, Penyghent

Divers: Fabian Ehlers (TD), Rob Middleton (QD)

Equipment:

Aim: An experience dive into Dub Cote Cave using familiar sidemount equipment but with 2 x 5L cylinders due to the size of the cave. Dive Sump 1 followed by a short penetration of Sump 2 before returning.

Report:
Following yesterdays sessions at Capernwray Dive Centre as part of the annual CDG training camp, I have been given the opportunity to experience my first sump conditions today. An offer I couldn't turn down!
Rob and myself spent the evening prior doing some gas calculations and inspected the survey. Once the necessary kit had been organised and we kitted up, we had a gentle walk along the roads towards the cave entrance.

Rob was right, the beginning can be slightly awkward. Especially as this was the first time with me having two 5L cylinders attached to my harness. We made steady progress and kitted up in the sump pool, last gas check and calculation of thirds - let's go.

Now this cave is interesting, visiblity is fair, space lengthways is reasonable but the space above is somewhat limited. A definite tank banger... you find a restriction, get stuck - reverse and try again until you fit.
A quick chat in the first air bell, Rob talked about his "save a dive kit" which he carries into sumps using a waterproof rocket tube. We discussed what potential failures a diver could experience on the other side of a sump and how you could solve these issues.

We continued into Sump 2 with the limit being set as the first junction before returning and making our way out.

A thoroughly enjoyable dive and definitely gave me a good experience into UK sump diving, love it or hate it, it's not for everyone. For me, I like it. It's the possibility of exploring flooded sections which not every care may be able to see.
